Zimbabwe Travel Ban Lifted by USA

Some great news out of Zimbabwe.

The United States has lifted warnings, issued in 2002, against travel to Zimbabwe. The announcement comes a week after Japan lifted travel warnings on Zimbabwe. It is expected to generate an influx of tourist arrivals.

Madagascar VISA information Update

It was confirmed yesterday that the National Tourism Board of Madagascar has announced that NO ENTRY VISA IS REQUIRED for a stay of maximum 30 days, until 31st December 2009.

This is valid for all nationalities entering Madagascar. Clients will not have to pre-purchase a visa before departing, and will not have to purchase a visa on arrival to Antananarivo airport.

Really good news if you are travelling there.

We have a great announcement, we have been received our SATSA Bonding. Our SATSA bonding number is 1712.

SATSA is the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association and is the driving force behind improving standard of tourism in South Africa. The bonding scheme is a protection for clients against companies going into liquidation.

“Our bonding scheme is a kind of insurance policy which covers inbound foreign tourists against a possible loss of deposits paid to SATSA members – tourism operators, car rental companies, service providers, accommodation providers and the like – should such a member go into involuntary liquidation,” says Tatalias. He added that without such a bond in place to protect a clients deposits, clients could lose substantial amounts
of money.

Says Tatallias, So far tourism bonding schemes in existence abroad are all government sponsored and are designed to protect the interests of tourists who contract with outbound travel agents. The South Africa bond covers both members of the public and any SATSA member who places business with any other SATSA member. Payments may have been in the form of paying a deposit, for accommodation, car rental or for a tour with a SATSA member.

“Should a SATSA member who is a South African tourism business operation run into financial problems, the bonding scheme allows the client to claim back his deposit without having to prove in a court or to the liquidator whom or what he paid, but simply to produce the relevant documentation to SATSA.”

The SATSA bonding policy carries an indemnity of R1 500 000 per premium cycle (per premium year or part thereof) limited to a maximum of R300 000 per incident. The scheme is underwritten by Lombard Insurance and certain underwriting syndicates at Lloyds of London and is administered by SATSA.

More than ever before it is important to make use of the bonded services of SATSA members for secure holiday bookings in South Africa.

Xenophobia in South Africa

The last 2 weeks have been an embarrassment for all South Africans. A few so called 'South Africans' have shocked the hearts of our country.

They have embarrassed the nation and the freedom fighters that sacrificed their lives for freedom. President Mbeki spoke to the nation last night and hit it home when he mentioned about South Africa's example of Ubuntu (working together) that we have shown the world. This has now been left in taters.

Our economy has been built on foreigners in our mines and without them we would be not have the largest economy in Africa.

Thankfully it seems to be calming down but largely due to the police patrolling the township hot spots. On the positive side the country has pulled together to support the foreign nationals. 250 people have been arrested in the last week and we hope many more. Thankfully the government and the leaders have stood up against it.

In my opinion it has been opportunistic people jealous of the success that the foreign immigrants have made for themselves rather than waiting for the government handouts. Unfortunately a small group of people feel that they are owed something from the country.

Victoria Falls safety and security update

What's it like seeing gorillas in the wild on an Africa Overland

The first moment I set my eyes on the silverback and his family was a truly a breathtaking experience. You just can't believe your eyes. I will never forget looking down from a cliff and seeing the beautiful animals below.

We trekked in the thick vegetation for 3 hours which was beautiful as we passed villages and saw how the locals live in the area. The walk is certainly for fit people and the length of the walk depends on where you go to see the gorillas on the day. Some people only walk for 30 minutes while other routes are longer, like mine was.

Make sure you carry at least a 1 litre of water as I didn't have enough but my guide was so kind and offered his water. It is important to wear comfy trainers (not new ones as they will give you blisters and get ruined in the thick bush). Long trousers are necessary and a long, thin sleeve top. It will be hot and humid and depending on the time of the year you could be walking in the rain. Comfy longs socks which you must tuck your trousers into so that red ants don't crawl up your legs, or you can wear gaters.

When you get to the gorillas you will be asked to sit down and you will spend an hour with them. When I was there a big mom came over to see us with her baby. It was just amazing and our guide told us to look down and never in the eyes. While we were sitting there a gorilla toddler (probably 8 months old) came running up to us and started beating on his chest like Tarzan. Such a show off!

It was honestly one of the best experiences in my life. They were just so huge and so gentle, and I was amazed that they allowed us to witness an hour of their every day life.

Just to let you know the permit (currently 500-600 USD) goes to the park and the preservation of the gorillas. Minimum age is 16 but I recommend 18 to be the minimum.

When is the best time to go on an overland to East Africa?

Hi everyone,

This is a question we get asked loads. For me personally, the present is always the best time to go on an africa overland to East Africa but naturally for all of us our diaries and holidays don't allow for us to close the laptop and hit the road.

Thanks to the size and unique areas in East Africa means that it is a year round destination. Let me highlight the best time to visit certain areas.

Best times to visit Tanzania:

Jul-Aug: During this time, the weather is cool. Dry season parks, like Tarangire, are at their prime. This is the best time to visit the Serengeti because during the height of the dry season, almost all the animals will go away on their own holiday in Kenya's Masai Mara.
June- October allows is great for Zanzibar as the tempreture is around 28 degrees
December to mid March is the calving season in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater which is has amazing game viewing.

Best times to visit Kenya:

July to August: During this time the migration crosses the Mara River where the animals stay in the Masai Mara until November (short rain season) before heading south back into the Serengeti.

Jan – Feb. Most people find the hot, dry weather during this time the most pleasant in comparison to the rest of the year’s weather.

This is also the best time for bird watching, as bird in huge numbers flock to the lakes. Nakuru is a hit with the flamingos.

Best times to go to Uganda:

June – Sept: This is a very dry period. April to October brings the rains which isn't ideal.

What to pack for an Africa Overland?

What to pack for an Africa camping overland?

I hope this gives you a guide on things to bring for your overland. Naturally the less you have the better but there are some crucial things you need. Here is a list to help:

3-4 short sleeved shirts or T-shirts
2 pairs trousers or 1 pair and 1 skirt – try not jeans as they take forever to dry after washing
Warm sweater or fleece
Towel and/or sarong
1-2 pairs shorts
Track pants
Light sweater or sweatshirt
Underwear and socks
Sunglasses
Hat or cap
Water/wind proof jacket
Boots or sturdy trainers
Swimsuit
Set of reasonably smart clothes to wear for the odd meal or night out
Sandals or thongs. Need to be waterproof if you want to go white-water rafting
Extra memory/film for your camera. Remember to set at the highest resolution as you might want to enlarge the pictures
Personal toiletries but not make-up and electric shaver
Head Torch: It is so much easier than a handheld torch.
Soft sided backpack
Travel pillow
Sleeping Bag (it can get cold at nights (shouldn't be colder than 4 degrees and hotter than 30 degrees in winter)
Sweater: great for using as an additional pillow
Water Bottle
Book (you can swop with the rest of the group)
Warm Fleece and long trousers

I was going to email you Gelle – they had a fantastic time! I think they took every opportunity on offer (including bungee jumping – I’m glad I heard about that one after the event!).
Thank you so much for your help and reassurance – they had no problems, they said the driver was excellent and informative and they enjoyed the food – particularly the cooking in a hole in the Delta! They also had really good polers who were fun and sang for them. They saw lots of animals and loved the two cruises.

Africa Safaris and Overlands have just got cheap thanks to the weaking of the South African Rand

Every so often the South African Rand gets hit by the markets thus weakening it against the foreign currencies (GBP, USD, Euro, etc) therefore making holidays to Africa much more affordable. This is currently one of these times.

I have just done some figures and since the beginning of January 2008 the Rand has lost 18% of it's value against the British Pound. This means that your overland or safari has just got 18% cheaper.

It has lost 17% against the US Dollar and 11 % against the Euro.

What does this mean to travellers? If you are paying South African Rands for your Africa overland tour then you will be saving a lot.

Feedback on Kenya to Cape Town Overland- Cathy Hovers

Cathy travelled on the 56 Day Great African Trek and this was her feedback:

Well, my mega trip through Africa…. An experience of a lifetime!!

Flew into Nairobi, Kenya and landed on the 7th November. It's so scary all the trouble there now and I thank my lucky stars that I didn't book the trip any later than when I went.

We started off with the Masai Mara leg of the trip where I not only got to meet the tribes people, but also view the great migration crossing of

east Africa. This is one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles, where 1.5 million wildebeest, gazelle and zebra's migrate over 1,800 miles each year from the vast Serengeti plains to Kenya's Masai Mara in search of rain ripened grass. The resulting carnage of this you can see on the photo. The smell was proof enough!!! The Masai warriors entertained us with their jumping skills around the camp fire and I was chosen to accompany the jumping 'king' – very big honour and still not sure if it was my (very) white skin, blue eyes or height that secured this privilege…ha ha ha!

We slept out in the open in the Serengeti and this is where the camping started to really roughen up. Putting up tents in 45 degree Celsius afternoon heat and taking down at 4.30am in the dark is a bit of a trial but no running water or toilet facilities for 2 days was an even bigger trial…never been more dirty, especially after full days safari's in open 4X4's. Make up and combed hair were forgotten in London!!!

Tanzania was gorgeous and green and in the town I sat in on an open court case held at the United Nations for prosecution of Rwanda genocide war crimes. Took very long with lawyers having to translate for their clients the questions from English to Swahili and vice-versa. Very interesting for sure!!!

Zanzibar was just brilliant – I went swimming with wild dolphins in the sea and it was the strangest experience ever. The snorkelling was amazing there with many bright Nemo fish and starfish. I even saw our boatman spear an eel.

Malawi was also very hot but thankfully our tents could be placed on the sand right by the waters edge. The lake is so huge that it looks like the sea. Very strange not to taste salty. We had a party the one night here and had to buy an outfit for a group member from the local market. What an experience that was- haggling with the locals for totally inappropriate outfits…

I also had the pleasure of visiting a local witchdoctor and got to see the box of potions…anything from 'beauty' to 'lucky in love' to placing a spell on someone!

The one evening there was great commotion and we were all called over to see what they had found outside a tent near the bathrooms…. A 2 metre long black Mamba snake- extremely poisonous and absolutely gave us the hibby-jibbies, especially after I found out the tent location in question WAS WHERE MY TENT WAS!!!!!!

Zimbabwe wasn't as bad as I thought and we all still managed to have plenty of food even though the shop shelves were scarcely stocked. Victoria Falls was just beautiful with many lookout points. The power of the water was so immense that even standing on the opposite bank, you were covered with the misty spray!

River rafting down the Zambezi was brilliant but a little scary with grade 6 rapids and knowing that crocodiles laced the banks. I also crazily booked myself on a half day adrenaline package…oh my nerves…for all my sins!!! It involved three 'routines' with the finale being a gorge swing. Have never been that scared – even lost my voice and only recovered it after I was left swinging at the bottom…gave out a HUGE whelp of sheer appreciation to be alive!

The currency was ridiculous and apparently the beer price changed every day. It was about a million Zim Dollars to one US$…you had to carry wads of money around as you can see Belinda, our tour guide with the equivalent of a few US$'s worth…

Botswana held one of my highlights, which was the Okovango Delta where we had 3 days of pure nature! No toilets or running water again as we literally just stopped where we saw a clearing large enough to accommodate our pack of tents. We had poleman take us out on Mokoro's from the departure point. Just beautiful meandering through the water channels. We did a 4-hour walk there too which was stunning. Waterlillies decorated the reeds all over – just stunning.

Just outside Namibia our truck broke down...oh no! We sent our tour guide into town with the only car that came past (very smug) and took absolute opportunity of the situation by holding a MAJOR party 'on board'…yip, absolute carnage…was the most fun party I have ever attended, that's for sure. We very cleverly pulled together 30 people's left over alcohol and called this vile mixture PUNCH. It tasted much better once we chopped up some apples to go inJ We even managed to find some party hats, streamers and poppers. This carried on for 7 hours until we were 'carried' off the bus and dropped into 4x4's to take us into Etosha National camp. Absolutely fabulous! We all became instant best friends and best drinking pals after that which saw us every evening after supper sitting around the campsite fire singing songs albeit a bit rude at points!!!

In Etosha safari park we stayed at 2 camps namely Okakeujo and Namitoni. We went for night game rides and saw so many animals at the two watering holes with rhino's, lions and elephants making an appearance amongst others.

We then travelled down to Spitzkoppe and visited a cheetah park. There was a baby giraffe there too which was tame so we could touch her baby fur...too gorgeous with her long eyelashes and only a bit taller than me…so gorgeous!

Now for the ultimate…skydiving over the Namib dessert. At 10 000 feet, I realised it was the craziest thing I had ever experienced to date!!!

Namibia is beautiful with its dunes and walking up Dune 45 for sunset was a very rewarding experience. The Fish River Canyon is also something very special. I did find as I got closer to sunny Cape Town, I started really looking forward to arriving.

Well folks, Cape Town arrival date came on 22 December. It was very sad to say good bye to such amazing people and realise it was all over. The best thing to do and would highly recommend you visit Africa!!

Chie went on the 12 Day Cape Town to Windhoek Overland (Best of Namibia) and has some great feedback.
Yesterday I arrived home at San Francisco and got email from my sister about you.
I really enjoyed the tour and had a great time with new friends!
Especially I was impressed at a wild camp. I slept on the rock without a tent and saw many falling stars.
Also in Etosha NP I could watch so many animals! I suppose our team were very lucky!!
This tour staffs were very kind and helpful. I enjoyed every meal during the tour.
Just one thing I felt so sad is that I was the only person who got off in Windhoek.
Everyone continued tour to Victoria Fall except me. I understood this situation but I just felt sad honestly.

Anyway I really thank you because you introduced this tour to my sister and I.
I made many friends there and I will keep in touch with them.
Also I was glad to spend great time with my sister in Africa.
I will positively go back to South Africa! I hope you take care of my trip again.

Emirates set to begin daily Cape Town flights in March

Great news for Cape Town is that on March 30, Emirates will begin operating daily flights between Cape Town International Airport and Dubai International Airport

Emirates will be operating its Boeing 777-200, one of their largest aircraft. The plane offers comforts such as personal video screens, in-seat phones, and facilities to send and receive email and sms from each seat.

The Emirates’ flight EK 771 will take off daily from Cape Town International Airport at 18:10 hours, touching down at Dubai International Airport at 05:40 hours the following day. The Inbound flight EK 770 will depart Dubai at 08:35 hours, arriving in Cape Town at 16:25 hours.

It means the there will be some great pricing and flight options and more people seeing our beautiful country!

December Holiday to Egypt by Nicola Grayson

My December holiday in Egypt:

I spent a very entertaining, interesting and eye-opening holiday in a magnificent part of the world in December. Just one warning – do not go to Egypt if you want to relax – it is an adventure and

you have little time to stand still unless you book into a resort and not step outside the door – but then why travel in the first place?!

It is a massive, open place so full of people, animals and museums. The buildings are left natural in colour as the desert winds create a worn look and the people wear dark or natural colours too…so

when you see the spice market you are blown away by beautiful colours and smells. Take Egyptian pounds in cash as it is hard to exchange travellers cheques and with US dollars you can get an unfavourable rate. Also you will see how everyone wants a tip for their service! Even the lady in the toilet who hands you some paper as you go into your cubicle!

One factor to realise is the star rating of hotels….a 4 star is not really a 4 star but more like a 1 or maybe 2 star. So if you have a certain level you want to travel then only go 5 star or else you will be disappointed!

We spent 2 nights in Cairo initially. This is a good way to start as you fly in here first anyway and you can get a feel for the capital and its culture. Cairo is a VERY busy place and you will have many people trying to talk to you and sell you things – these include homemade perfume to spices to papyrus artwork to chess boards to stuffed leather camels…you will see a lot of these. Make sure you bargain with the people as they tend to start very high! If you walk away slightly the price tends to tumble down almost immediately! They get desperate to do business with you and I had one man say he would marry me if I just came to look in his shop! We did a tour of the pyramids and sphinx, the museum and the markets in one day. This is quite nice to do like this as you can then choose where you would like to go back and spend more time if you so choose.

Then we took a flight to Abu Simbel to see the temple there. I would advise flying as it costs next to nothing and also the train takes 12 hours and is apparently rather uncomfortable with dreadful food.

This temple was the highlight of our trip – standing close to 36m in height – it is an unbelievable creation. The inside tomb is stunning and still very well kept with much paintwork still showing beautiful colours.

You can stay the night if you choose ( it is not necessary) - we did and then that evening we visited a Nuweibian home and experienced their food and culture. Fascinating and very friendly people! They are darker in colour to Egyptians and speak a language called Nuweibian.

The next morning we took a short flight to Aswan to meet our cruise boat for our trip up the Nile. Friends of ours drove – it takes around 4 hours and the road is apparently fine. The one danger is hijacking/attacks by rebels who dislike tourists so tour groups arrange convoys to drive together to help to prevent this. As I said – flying is cheap, quick and safe so why drive and waste precious hours!

Aswan is very pretty – here you will see the desert meet the Nile. The town is quite large with dull buildings and horse drawn carriages and taxis on the roads! We visited Kitchener’s Island by felucca ( small sailboat) which was awesome and also the Temple of the Nobles which was worthwhile too. You get lovely views of Aswan from up there. I would not recommend the trip to Aswan High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk is a bit underwhelming too. We ended up staying here 3 nights ( not by choice but because our tour guide made a mistake) but I would only stay 1 night and 2 full days. There is a lovely souq (market) to visit and buy pretty shawls, spices, incense etc. Finally our boat moved and we stopped the next day at Kom Ombo and Edfu which are both great to see – you will see the first calendar here! Just to talk about the cruise ship – it was 5 star in rating – believe me this is more like max 3 star. If you go with low expectations then you will be happy. It is rather cheap in any case so you get what you pay for! You also never really experience moving as your boat cruises whilst you are asleep, so an option is to drive in between Aswan and Luxor and stay at hotels along the way!

We arrived in Luxor – this is a very beautiful place and in 22 years the entire city will become a museum as archaeologists are uncovering more of the temple every day!

The Temple of Karnak is a must – huge and so detailed and the Luxor Temple is beautiful and has rows of gorgeous Sphinxs that I won’t forget! I would recommend staying here 1 night and then doing the East bank one day and the West bank the next day.

From here we took a short flight to the Red Sea. Definitely fly here – our friends took a train and car and only arrived 26 hours later whereas our flight was 1,5 hours!

At the Red Sea we visited Sharm el Sheik for 2 nights and then Dahab for 3 nights. Sharm is a bit like South Africa’s Plett – rich Arabs holiday in Sharm and Dahab is like Jeoffery’s Bay – more chilled and relaxed with many backpackers. Up to you what you enjoy. In Sharm, we went out for the day on a big boat and snorkeled – you will see awesome fish. For those who don’t like snorkkeling, you can go in a glass bottomed boat. We then drove to Dahab – it is a good road and takes 1 hour max. Dahab has 2 parts – the town where backpackers chill and there are vibey restaurants and a souq and then 10 minute drive away are the resorts – like the Hilton – which have there own beaches. The sea and the snorkelling is awesome in Dahab! It has the famous Blue Hole which has lovely tropical fish but the one sad thing is the coral is dying and is all brown as there is no regulation of tourists destroying it by walking on it etc. We took a camel safari here and had dinner with the Bedouins in the desert – of all our meals this was the best! You can also take a day trip to St Catherine from here and see the church there and the hill Moses received the 10 commandments.

Then we went back to Cairo for a last night before heading home. We enjoyed ourselves but we were happy to be going home in the end! Egypt is a hectic place, very dirty and busy. You will be harassed constantly so you need to have a lot of energy. I would definitely recommend travelling with at least one other person and single ladies must wear a wedding band to stop getting marriage proposals! It is a real adventure though and through the tales and museums you will be in awe of what an already mighty force the Egyptians were 4000 years ago.

Client Feedback on Kenya, Serengeti and Zanzibar Overland- Jan 08

Hi Gelle

I had a great holiday thank you - everything went to plan. Even better than
that I got a good mix of being with other people and having some quiet time
on my own, there was some adventuring and some opportunities to just chill
out - and I didn't see any issues in Kenya.

The Ngorongoro crater was spectacular and probably the highlight of the
trip. I saw loads of animals - Zanzibar was lovely... but very hot and
humid... and I found it difficult to deal with the heat when not on the
beach to get a bit of breeze. In Stonetown, the Zanzibar Coffee House was a
lovely place to stay, but I wouldn't recommend it to people travelling on
their own, as it's in a part of town away from restaurants and other tourist
things, and I found walking through the maze of alleyways rather daunting -
especially after dark!! I never felt threatened... but was aware of my
vulnerability should someone want to snatch my bag... This meant that I
tended to stay in after the sun had gone down, when it would have been nice
to explore beach bars and the like.

The other feedback that I gave to 'the guide was that it would have been nice to know in advance that there were opportunities to upgrade accommodation at a number of places
we stayed. When there were options to upgrade, to beach huts, or cabins, I
generally took them... so only spent 4 nights in the tent they provided (2
nts sharing with another lady and 2 nts having a tent to myself).

All in all, it was a great break and I have been recommending Zanzibar to my
friends for a quiet, out of season holiday.

Before I share my Mozambican experience with you, I kindly request that you pardon any trite descriptions or romanticized depictions of the country , because it is truly a place where clichés meet and no illustration can do justice to the relations and surroundings of Ponta D’ Ouro.
Ponto D’ Ouro is a coastal village on the southern tip of Mozambique. The official language is Portuguese and the currency is Metical, although you can also purchase with the South African Rand. As we entered the village the breath of Africa was exhaled onto us. Laughing children greeted us and helped us find our way to our lodging at Café del Mar, which is a restaurant and accommodation owned by a French couple, Dittio and Natalie. With the tangible hospitality, the inviting ambiance is only emphasized and the strong sense of carousing foreshadowed. The restaurant offers a gourmet selection of seafood and French delicatessens. More familiar foods are also available for those who wish not to hone a refined taste. The first evening we soon discovered that the festivities and the beating of bongo drums echo well after the rooster has crowed - life in Ponto D’ Ouro never stops.

The excellent food, zealous parties, exceptionally friendly people and breathtaking beach were only an appetizer to what was to follow: Scuba Diving in an inconceivable beautiful ocean. Ponto D’ Ouro boasts with a range of reefs, varying in depth and marine life. Once submerged, I entered a carnival of colour. Every dive offers a unique experience, including diving with sharks and exploring unusual and intricate soft and hard corals. There are a number of excellent dive charters. I dived with The Whaler, where professionalism and efficiency were always present. If you are an avid diver, I advise you to pay Ponto D’ Ouro a visit as soon as your schedule and pocket allow you.

For those who do not dive, there are Dolphin Encounter Tours, on which you are likely to snorkel with dolphins. I was fortunate enough to go on such a tour, where I had the opportunity to snorkel and interact with a shoal of approximately 35 dolphins. An experience that words cannot describe.

On exploring the village, I came across markets showcasing exquisite African crafts. The vibrant culture of Ponto D’ Ouro is evident in all aspects of daily life.

Once I arrived home, it felt like I left a piece of myself behind in Ponto D’ Ouro. Inevitably, the vivacious essence of Ponto D’ Ouro will always follow me until I return to the village healing from past struggles and flirting with a dazzling future.

Umfolozi /Hluhluwe National Park in Kwazulu Natal

I spent the whole of Saturday in the Umfolozi /Hluhluwe Park ..its only 1 ½ drive from Richards Bay and we were there just after they opened the gate for the day . The weather was nice and cool unusual for December in Zululand . We saw everything except any of the big cats and elephants .The park is the greenest I’ve ever seen it and puddles of water to be found around every corner …..a beautiful site especially during one of the warmest and most humid months of the year . The Hluhluwe – Umfolozi Park lies in the heart of the Zulu Kingdom , where ancient trails lead through the thornveld and along the mighty rivers of Africa’s oldest established Wilderness area. This rich tapestry of natural cultural history still beats with the rhythms of Africa .

The Hluhluwe section in the North is characterised by towering grassland hills and diverse terrain and vegetation and is exceptional for its rich variety of bird and animal life . The Umfolozi section in the south is also a natural treasure store for fascinating fauna and flora , with species including the big five – lion , leopard, elephant , buffalo,black and white rhino , as well as blue wildebeest , zebra , giraffe, impala , waterbuck , reedbuck , nyala , kudu , bushbuck , steenbuck , duiker , warthog , cheetah , wild dog , hyena and many others . Over 300 bird species have been recorded here .

We stopped at Hilltop camp for some refreshments and although I am familiar with the view from Hilltop camp it still remains a breathtaking sight every time I see it . There is a lovely restaurant the only one in the park . They cater for breakfast , lunch and dinner however bookings are recommended …a meal with a view apopular outing amongst tourists and the local Zululanders. There is a curio shop with a wide range of curios , books , gifts, refreshments , snacks .

We packed a picnic basket and enjoyed a delicious brunch at Sontuli Picnic spot which overlooks the Black Umfolozi River. There are 4 picnic spots in the park Umbondwe – offers a view of the Black Umfolozi , Umgane – also offers a view of the Black Umfolozi . Mpila picnic site is situated within the camp surrounds where there are braai and toilet facilities .

This is a wonderful park for day visitors or for those looking to spend a couple of nights in the park itself . Umfolozi /Hluhluwe Park has the highest population of white rhino in Southern Africa you are almost guaranteed of seeing rhino each time you go on a game drive. Choosing an Africa Overland Tour

How do you decide on an Africa overland tour?

I know what it is like, like you I also took a long time before I decided on the trip to do. I remember looking through tons of brochures and websites and feeling overwhelmed. You probably have loads of questions, that is why we are here to assist:

I hope some of these points assist you in deciding on the Africa overland tour.

How much time do you have?

Trips vary in length with the average trips being 3 weeks. There are however short 4 day to long 200 plus day trips. Most popular routes are the Cape to Vic route and then the Vic to Nairobi route (in both directions).

Where or what do you want to see?

Animals, bush, beaches, particular game reserves (i.e. Masai Mara, Serengeti or Kruger) or specific countries.

Do you want a rough experience or a more comfortable route?

Southern Africa compared to East Africa is a bit more comfortable experience with most properties or campsites with swimming pools. Shops are more frequent with your usually snacks. East African roads and infrastructure is a bit more wild.

Do you want to camp or share accommodated rooms?

Accommodated trips are extremely popular due to having a bed at night to sleep in. You must bear in mind that you might need to share a room with other travellers. If you prefer to camp then there are times that you might be able to upgrade to a room if you are tired of camping. This is all dependent on availability.

Are you looking for budget tours with more travellers or smaller trips?

Some trips have higher number i.e 26 people while others have 4 or 6 people. The higher the number the more budget the trip.

Is the tour operator reputable?

Ask your travel agent who will be running the tours and how long they have been running for, you can then look on forums to see if they are good or not. There are about 30 – 40 different overland operators at any time. Some are very small and other bigger. All have their good and bad points and it all depends on what you are looking for. The operators that we use have been choose from years of experience in the industry and from there track records. The most important feedback we get is from our clients and forums.

Africa Overland | Cape Town to Vic Falls

The Cape to Vic Falls overland tours are without a doubt one of the best and most popular trips to go on. They give a variety of experiences from wildlife, cultures to scenery. Their is a bit of everything.

Widlife:

If you are looking for wildlife then there are a number of opportunities to see great game on the Cape To Vic overland. Generally the most visited reserves for wildlife are Etosha National Park, Namibia; Okavango Delta, Botswana and Chobe National Park, Botswana. There are numerous parts that you will drive along where you will see other animals.

Scenery:

You are going to see a wide diversity with too much to mention. My top scenery sites have to be the Fish River Canyon (www.africanoverlandtours.com/african-overland-destination/southern-africa/namibia.php#fishrivercanyon) just over the South Africa and Namibia border. It is the 2nd largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in the USA. It is an amazing place to sit and what the sunset.
Other top areas for me have to be the Sousesvlei dunes. They are huge...AMAZING. Climbing them is a rush and a definite must. Etosha in the north has a lot of diversity from hardy bushes in the south to parse vegitation further north. This is just a few great scenic spots in Namibia but there is just so much more like the Skeleton Coast and the mountains around Spitskoppe (great for rock climbing).

Botswana has some great scenery with the most visited areas of Okavango and Chobe offering diversity from the waterways and lush bush of the Delta to the more dry region around Chobe (when there is no rain).

You will see some much from mountains, to wetlands, to deserts, just bring enough film or memory on your cameras.

Adventure activities on your Africa overland:

Their are tons on offer so budget for them as you will end up doing loads on your africa overland. For me personally quad biking in the dunes of Namibia brought the biggest smile on my face. I have actually used some of my photo's of me quadbiking as it really is one of my top activities. Other people rave about flying over the Delta (it is expensive but if you can get a few travellers to do it it will reduce the per person cost). Vic Falls is by far the mecca for adreneline sports so brace your self. Loads of people go white river rafting on the Zambezi (http://www.africanoverlandtours.com/adventure-activities.htm#zimbabwe). I have had loads of clients rave about flying over the falls in the micro light. I haven't done it as I have a bit of a thing about heights but they all rave about it.

Shopping on the overland trip:

Hands down the best value for money has to be in Vic Falls for African crafts. The markets are large and have great gifts on offer. The great thing is also that you can ship your stuff home from there. It is cheap to send.

What to pack on your african overland?

For this trip it is dependent on the time of the year. For winter months it can be very cold at night and in the mornings while in summer it will be hot during the days. It is quite simple. Pack for hot and cold and simply bring layers. You can always just add or remove. I would recommend not to wear white clothes as they will get dirty. It is going to be dusty. Bring some comfy trainers or hiking boots as you will be walking in the bush and the shoes will take a beating.

What not to forget about?

Bank cards (there are ATM's but just dont use them in Vic Falls).
Malaria tablets (a must from the north of Namibia to Vic Falls)
Visa's (all though saying that depending on your nationality visa's can be got at the borders www.projectvisa.com)
Sense of humour as some people might annoy you.
Your adventurous spirit and that you are in Africa (some things don't run to plan).
